Critically acclaimed folk group takes over VEGA with dark storytelling
Past and present come together to create dark and fateful tales when Irish band Lankum perform their poignant and unique folk songs. Here, the hand-played intensity of folk music and macabre tales of lost souls intertwine with modern experimental songwriting, fuelled by slow unfolding compositions, punky energy, crushing gothicism and churning musical drones.
The band's big break came last year when Lankum's third studio album False Lankum - recorded in isolation in an old Irish castle - was released. The Guardian's reviewer gave it a full house with five out of five stars and subsequently named it - like Uncut - album of the year, and Pitchfork praised the album, writing: "At times False Lankum plays (...) as one long fever dream composed of scenes from across centuries".
In Denmark, Information's reviewer was also positive, concluding that "in the break between raw vocal harmonies, strong melodies and dark drones, Lankum have created their own unique position in modern folk". Lankum were also among the nominees for the prestigious British music award Mercury Prize last autumn.
Live, Lankum is a smoulderingly intense experience where singing, stomping, hand claps and traditional instruments meet electric instruments that amplify the uncompromising expression with droning waves of noise.
The band has performed several times in Denmark, including at Roskilde Festival, where the band will also be playing this summer. This autumn, the Irish will return to Denmark, where they will reach another milestone when they play their biggest venue concert in Denmark September 7th in Store VEGA.
