Charley Crockett’s edgy country tales

When you hear Charley Crockett’s baritone voice, you’re never in doubt of who’s behind the microphone. The American musician manages to make old songs sound new and new music sound old. He has worked his way into the consciousness of music fans with his distinctive mix of country, blues, soul, cajun, R&B and other elements of American roots music.

Last year, Crockett released the album, “The Man From Waco”, which really caused a stir among reviewers. The disc is the 12th album in his discography since his debut in 2015, and was ranked 2nd in Rolling Stone’s list of the Best Country and Americana Albums from 2022.

The 14 songs on the album encompass epic western tales. The title is inspired by Crockett’s friend, the late songwriter James “Slim” Hand, who was born and passed away in Waco, Texas. Crockett has also drawn inspiration from the Jim Jarmusch film “Dead Man”.

Charley Crockett left home at the age of 17 and taught himself how to play music on the streets of New Orleans, Dallas and New York.
